Today is the eve to Christmas Eve, which means that there are only two more days left until Christmas! Yay, how exciting! This has me thinking about all of the Christmas traditions that my family and I enjoy doing each year. Since we’ve become married my husband and I have combined Christmas traditions that we had growing up. We’ve also added our own Christmas traditions that we like to do with our kids. Here are activities that we like to do during the Christmas holiday:
Put up our Christmas decorations right after Thanksgiving – The day after Thanksgiving we are ready to pull out all of our decorations from the previous year. Sometimes we are so excited that we have to contain ourselves because we are ready to put them up before Thanksgiving. Before actually hanging up the decorations, we even make a trip to pick up new items such as:
New ornaments for the kids – This is a tradition that my husband and I started together when we had our first child. Each year they are able to pick out a new ornament. This year it is a Mickey ornament for my son and a Minnie one for my daughter. I enjoy looking at their new ornaments each year because I take a moment to remember what milestones they were completing at this time last year. With Mickey and Minnie, I will remember how interested they were in them. So much so that they love watching Mickey Mouse clubhouse any chance that they get. They will also argue and throw a tantrum if the other has their stuffed Mickey or Minnie doll.
Christmas music – While we are putting up our decorations we like to listen to Christmas music. We also have a radio in our bathroom that we like to have on a radio station that continuously plays Christmas music. We enjoy singing them together, especially in the car or while wrapping gifts. Some of our favorite Christmas albums are: A Motown Christmas, Merry Christmas by Mariah Carey, Christmas Interpretations by Boyz II Men and Christmas by Michael Buble.
Christmas arts and crafts – I especially enjoy doing this during the holiday season with my children. Each year I choose a few crafts that I like and most of them I get from Pinterest. Since my daughter is only one this year I let her scribble on paper with crayon and rip pieces of paper apart to include her.
Donate toys/clothing – I like to donate clothing all year round. However, I feel that this is a great way to give back during the Christmas season. Not only do we donate clothing, but I also like to go through my children’s toys and pick out items that they no longer really play with to give to children that do not have as much. This year we talked to my son and explained to him how it is always good to give especially to those that are not as fortunate as we are. This made him feel better about giving some of his toys away.
Drive around our neighborhood to see Christmas lights – This was a tradition that both my husband and I had growing up that we like to do with our children. I love to hear the oohs and ahhs come from my children as they point to all of the houses that are lit with Christmas lights.
Bake cookies – My son always looks forward to this Christmas tradition. We make a variety of cookies such as chocolate chip, sugar, peanut butter and more. We like to give them out to others, and we also leave them out with a glass of milk on Christmas Eve for when Santa comes.
New pajamas – On Christmas Eve we all put on new pajamas. This is the one gift that we get to open on Christmas Eve. We enjoy it even though we expect it. It just means that we are so close to Christmas. We put on our pajamas, go to sleep, then…Christmas!
Watch Christmas movies – We like to watch these throughout the season. Some of our favorites are: Charlie Brown Christmas, This Christmas, Frosty the Snowman and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. We play The Grinch all year long. For some reason, my kids love this movie.
Read Christmas story in the Bible – We like to read this on Christmas Eve to remember the birth of Jesus. This is why we celebrate the season in the first place.
